Salary: Payment upon deliverable: $900-$1000 per candidate per year
Role Type: Contract / Fixed-term (programme-based)
Overview of the Role
Instructional Consultants (ICs) play a vital role in the growth and development of new teachers participating in the Performance Review Program for Initial Licensure (PRPIL) in Massachusetts.
Instructional Consultants provide structured support, guidance, and mentorship to PRPIL teaching candidates, acting as the candidate’s primary point of contact throughout the programme. Through observation, feedback, and portfolio review, ICs support candidates to demonstrate competence against the Massachusetts Professional Standards for Teachers using the Candidate Assessment of Performance (CAP) process.
Key Responsibilities
Your core responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Candidate Support and Assessment
- Observe and support candidates in demonstrating competence across selected elements of the Professional Standards for Teachers through the CAP process.
- Use two core sources of evidence: classroom observations and review of the teacher’s electronic portfolio.
- Provide formative and summative assessments aligned with PRPIL and CAP requirements.
Meetings and Collaboration
- Participate in three required tri-partite meetings with the teaching candidate and mentor teacher:
- Initial meeting: Introduce the program, outline requirements and documentation, and agree an observation schedule.
- Formative review meeting: Review formative assessment feedback and assess progress on the candidate’s portfolio.
- Summative meeting: Review the summative assessment, confirm completion of the e-portfolio, and sign off CAP documentation.
- Collaborate closely with mentor teachers to support candidate progress and provide aligned feedback.
Classroom Observations and Feedback
- Conduct a minimum of three announced classroom observations to assess candidate performance against selected CAP competencies.
- Deliver high-quality oral and written feedback within 24-48 hours of each observation.
- Hold post-observation meetings (in person or virtually) to agree clear, actionable development goals between observations.
Portfolio Development
- Support candidates in the development of their electronic portfolio, the capstone assessment demonstrating understanding and application of Massachusetts teaching and learning standards.
Programme Engagement
- Attend PRPIL-related training sessions throughout the school year.
- Ensure all documentation, assessments, and reports are completed accurately and on time.
Expected Behaviours and Working Style
- Make every interaction count - delivers focused, timely feedback that accelerates teacher development.
- Lead with expertise - offers credible, standards-informed guidance grounded in strong instructional practice.
- Support with empathy - builds trusting relationships through clear communication, encouragement, and respect for the realities of classroom teaching.
Role Deliverables
- High-quality formative and summative CAP assessments.
- Consistent, high-impact observation feedback aligned to Massachusetts Professional Standards.
- Effective mentoring support that enables candidates to successfully complete PRPIL requirements.
- Accurate and timely completion of all PRPIL programme documentation.
Essential
- National Board-Certified Teacher or a Master’s degree in teaching or a related field.
- Strong commitment to supporting equitable learning environments through intentional planning and instruction.
- Ability to conduct observations and meetings during the school day.
- Confidence in providing clear, constructive oral and written feedback.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to mentor and coach early-career teachers.
Desirable
- Prior experience supporting licensure, induction, or performance-based assessment programmes.
- Familiarity with the Massachusetts CAP process or Professional Standards for Teachers.
- Experience mentoring, coaching, or supervising teachers.
